I'm seeing double!

It was a rainy afternoon. My biological clock informed me that it's time for a light meal. Since La Promise, my usual place for afternoon tea, is merely 500 yards from my place, why not go there again for tea. Hopefully I'd find something interesting this time. Arrived at La Promise, the waitress led me to the cake cabinet and introduced their new item - Double Chocolate Brownie Cheesecake. Double chocolate? Such a perfect match with double espresso, which I normally order whenever I go to La Promise.

The Double Effect:

Steamed Egg Cake @ Sin Yoon Loong

I didn't bake or steam the egg cake (gai darn gou). Instead, it was the product of the famous white coffee place - Sin Yoon Loong. These fluffy and feathery light Gai Darn Gou's  make a wonderful afternoon tea snacks with its eggy taste and pillowy soft texture.

Ho's Birthday Tea

Ho celebrated her 41st birthday last Tuesday. As her birthday fell on a weekday, it was unlikely that she would celebrate it at home with her parents. Being the 'closest' person to her (sitting beside her in the common room), I tried by all means cheering her up on her big day and took her to Starbucks for a mini celebration. I even invited two favourite colleagues of hers to come along but only one had managed to make it while the other was feeling unwell on the same day.

Hoping for many more to come...

Dear friend,

It has been way too long since we last had tea and a chat. Just want to let you know how much I missed those wonderful moments we had when we both shared the same passion for coffee and cakes. Being the only person who loves eating my scones, you made my day by calling me out for tea. While taste was shallow and feelings were deep, it really did not matter even if the scones we ordered were too far from satisfaction. The cosiness called upon us to sit together to address our friendship in a meaningful way. I have one and hoping for many more to come.

It's a health cake day!

Eating rich and creamy cakes can be guilt-free. While you can finally indulge into the whole piece of your favourite cake all by yourself,  you spend less time worrying about the consequence but more time recalling the after taste of the sinless cake, every bit of it.

Pam's Fruitilicious Trifle

There's hardly any secret in this fruit trifle. Vanilla sponge at the bottom, followed by the fluffy meringue spread, sprinkled with lots of chopped fruits and topped with a layer of plain agar-agar. This simple yet healthy cake is something I call my own. When the idea of turning the above odd combinations into an edible product popped in my head, I tried to get a second opinion from some experts (not the certified professional but those Tom , Dick and Harry out there who love eating cakes). As expected, they shook their heads and frowned. This, however, had stimulated my creativity to develop better courage to try it out. The cake somehow turned out to be truly a surprise to those who expressed their serious disagreement over my daring creation.

Sense of Cakery

Days like these, are meant to be in movies. Secret Recipe, not the usual meeting place among us, sells the freshest cakes compared to other fast food brands. You can visit the cafe at any time of the day, tucking into rich and creamy cakes, washing them down with a shot of coffee or a pot of tea, enjoying every bit of the wonders of caffeine and butter. Life has never been so good.... To eat or not to eat? If it's to eat, that's up to me...

The PROMISE of an afternoon tea

My nephew Joel came to Taiping for a short stay. The purpose of his visit was to get free tuition from his koo koo (me of course) as he did fairly well in his recent school-based examination. Joel is such a nice boy. He worked very hard and completed all the homework assigned to him in time. As promised, I took him to La Promise for a scrumptious afternoon tea.

CBTL's Red Velvet Cupcake (special edition)

The red velvet cake is a regular item in the menu of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. It is always made into a large cake with an abundance of coconut shavings topped over layers of smooth cream cheese and lovely chocolate sponge. In conjunction with the Christmas season, CBTL makes the cakes into petite looking cupcakes beautifully topped with a swirl of cream cheese and red chocolate crunch.

Red Velvet Cupcake @ RM5.80

The Red Velvet Cake is specially made into the size of cupcakes specially for the Christmas season.

A popular cake with a red-brown colour, the red velvet cake is topped with a creamy cream cheese icing. The reddish colour is a result of the reaction of the cocoa powder with buttermilk.

Double-shot Americano @ RM8.40
