Roti Taiwan @ Enh Loh Cafeteria and Hotel

Arriving in Penang 8 hours before the departure time, I alighted from the ferry and headed towards The Lighthouse Cafe at Lebuh King. Luck was not on my side as the cafe was not open that day. I continued walking down the street and spotted this well known coffee shop at the junction of Lebuh Penang and Lebuhu Gereja. With a little bit of luck, I found this famous breakfast place which serves good toast and decent white coffee.

An extensive selection of breakfast toast

Roti Taiwan, a slice of thick Hainanese bread toasted, generously slathered with peanut butter and sprinkled with crushed peanuts.

The lightly toasted thick bread has a crispy crust but pillowy soft interior.

A mere RM3.40 is the price you pay for something as good as this.

A Breakfast Tune

Waking up early to a lonely breakfast is part of my daily routine. On weekdays, my breakfast normally consists of a cup of home-brewed coffee and a bowl of bran. When it comes to Saturdays, I enjoy doing myself a favour by pampering myself with some lovely toast sets to boost my spirit for the day.

Afternoon Tea @ Sin Yoon Loong

On one of those food-craving days, Mum and I enjoyed this old comfort afternoon tea at Sin Yoon Loong, which is probably the oldest coffee shop in town.

The Oldtown Triplets

Three teachers, armed with three empty stomachs, three appetites and three personalities, arrived at Old Town White Coffee 5 minutes after the dismissal time of school. CL, the big sister who has a sweet tooth, ordered Iced White Coffee and Ice Fire Polo Bun drizzled with excess amount of golden syrup. SE, the out-of-towner who is superb health-conscious, went for Hot White Coffee and Peanut Butter Toast which she claimed to be 'lighter' than the kaya butter version (I wonder...). As for Pam the rice-skipper, a set of steamed Hainanese Bread (definitely a healthier option) and black coffee (free from milk and sugar) were the only food that aroused her interest.

Yut Loy Coffee Shop, Kuala Kangsar

Yut Loy, an 82-year-old restaurant in Kuala Kangsar, is famous for their legendary pau which is made using traditional methods without addition of yeast. Steaming hot paus are rolled out from 2 p.m. onwards and cooked food is only available from 1 p.m. However, if you chance along this small town in the morning, you can still come to Yut Loy for some typical Hainanese breakfast food namely coffee, taost and eggs.

Food of yesteryear

Food of yesteryear - the most comforting type. It usually costs you a painless price but always guarantees a huge reward - a smile of contentment. In our childhood years, half-boiled eggs and butter kaya toast marked some remarkable breakfast moments we had with our family, while we enjoyed cracking open eggs in egg cups. Munching the crispy thick toast, dipping the toast into half-boiled eggs, drinking coffee from the saucer...... Life can't get any better than this, if only we could return to the past, and recollect all those past memories...

Singapore Discovery Vacation 2011: Lau Pa Sat Hawker Centre

Lau Pa Sat, literally translated as Old Market in Hokkien dialect, was the very first wet market in Singapore. It is now the largest hawker centre in the country and serves a variety of Singapore hawker food and delicacies. Needless to say, the well-known gourmet paradise is the best place to savour the real taste of Singapore.

Wong Kok Char Chan Teng: Revisit

Talked about Hong Kong style food, Wong Kok Char Chan Teng is not the most outstanding cafe. With limited choice of restaurants in Ipoh, Wong Kok is the only place that serves typical Hongkee style food. We went to De Garden for lunch and found customers overflow in queues . In spite of being packed to the brim, we somehow managed to get a table for three in less than five minutes.

Shrimp paste toast @ RM5.90

Yang Zhou style fried rice @ RM9.20
