Hoping for many more to come...

Dear friend,

It has been way too long since we last had tea and a chat. Just want to let you know how much I missed those wonderful moments we had when we both shared the same passion for coffee and cakes. Being the only person who loves eating my scones, you made my day by calling me out for tea. While taste was shallow and feelings were deep, it really did not matter even if the scones we ordered were too far from satisfaction. The cosiness called upon us to sit together to address our friendship in a meaningful way. I have one and hoping for many more to come.

Behind the Scenes

Don't sigh or close the tab when you see egg tarts in my new post again. I am neither showing you the stall nor their branch again, as you might suggest, over and over again. This post is about the making of egg tarts. Pam the adventurer, bearing the risk of being beaten up or kicked in the backside, sneaking into the kitchen of Choy Kee Bakery just to get a glimpse of the fantastic skills of the egg tart maestro, and of course, feeling honoured for being able to share this with everyone. Don't worry, my buttocks are fine, safe and sound. My arrival was much welcomed by the maestro because he could recognise me as his first customer who arrived at the bakery as early as 6.30 a.m. on the sixth day of Chinese New Year, when the bakery reopened after a 5-day break in conjunction of Chinese New Year celebration. That's what we call DIE HARD FAN!!!

The egg tart maestro filling each crust with just the right amount of custard mixture.

Handled with much perseverance, passion and patience.

Pouring out skilfully without spilling a drop and leaving a trace...

When they are baked...

Unmolding the tarts is seriously not a layman's job.

A Simple Egg Tart Equation
Skilful pouring + unmolding = A perfect looking egg tart ready to be served.

Of course I can never stop at one... One is never enough. What about you?

The PROMISE of an afternoon tea

My nephew Joel came to Taiping for a short stay. The purpose of his visit was to get free tuition from his koo koo (me of course) as he did fairly well in his recent school-based examination. Joel is such a nice boy. He worked very hard and completed all the homework assigned to him in time. As promised, I took him to La Promise for a scrumptious afternoon tea.

Melting here, melting there...

Everything is melting now, the outdoor temperature rises sharply above the optimum. However, will the melting process occur when one stays in an air-conditioned cafe? The answer is undoubtedly yes... and you would surely enjoy seeing things melt... here and there...

Taiping Vegetarian Heong Peng

Taiping is a peaceful town. So quiet, so simple. Luxurious living, lavish spending and splendorous lifestyle are usually unheard of. Don't come here for expensive shellfish like oyster or abalone, because there is hardly any. Don't come here for extravagant outfits, because they don't sell any. Don't come here for fine dining, because high end restaurants do not exist in this quaint town. So, why do you still come to Taiping? Perhaps everyone comes here for one common reason - unusually attractive and old-fashioned confectionery.

Congratulations to Kampung Simee Choy Kee on finally opening their new bakery!

Kampung Simee Choy Kee's new shop is now open in Kampung Simee! In the mid of July 2011, Choy Kee opened its first shop in the heart of Kampung Simee. Their die-hard egg tart fans are really excited to have their favourite stall venturing into a better prospect of the food and beverage industry, expanding their family business and extending their business hours till evening. This shop is located strategically near the Kampung Simee morning market, right on the corner of the cross road leading to Simee primary school, and beside the one and only 7-11 convenience shop in Kampung Simee. You can't miss it, the exterior of the shop is painted in bright red, together with an eye-catching read and white signboard bearing the name of their shop "Choy Kee Bakery".

The grand opening of their bakery is scheduled on 8th September 2011. The opening of Choy Kee Bakery is truly a great news to everyone in town. Now, they need not worry about the running out of egg tart supply which is usually sold out by 10.30  in the morning, because they can visit the bakery at any time of the day whereby batches of egg tarts are baked and delivered fresh from the kitchen till evening.

Anytime is a good time for egg tarts!

Levain Boulangerie and Patisserie

One of the most picturesque French-style patisseries in the heart of the hustle, bustle, rush and roar Kuala Lumpur, Levain froze Mum and I in place the first time we saw it. This patisserie-cum-café is well worth a visit. Located in the middle of rows of uniquely designed bungalows, this architectural gem has retained its original décor: High ceilings with a neo-classical touch. We enjoyed our cuppa made from only the freshest beans of Lavazza and pick our choice of delicious pastries beneath the fragrance of fresh bread and butter, to a backdrop of soothing soft music as we admired the enchanting paintings on the walls. In Levain’s havens of self-indulgence, we discovered hand-made cakes baked in a special stone oven, continental breakfasts, wide-selection of sandwiches, pasta cooked with sauces to die for, the finest coffees and a charming atmosphere that appeal to all coffee and pastry lovers.

Tempting. The idea of those stone oven-baked fresh bread and pastry caught my attention, but some fine viennoiseries and perhaps a deft touch with the classic pastries have got me truly hooked. How much I wish I could work there as… the owner of the patisserie.
