Fish me out at Manhattan Fish Market

The 2-day seminar was finally over. We were given a two-hour early dismissal so that we wouldn't get caught in the jam on the way back to the mainland. All the teachers sped off immediately without taking the afternoon tea provided by the hotel. I was one of them but we went on separate ways upon reaching the Penang Bridge. They took the exit onto the Penang Bridge while I went straight along the Bayan Lepas Expressway towards Queensbay Mall. I ended up spending more than 3 hours shopping around the mall and later enjoyed a super large meal all by myself at the Manhattan Fish Market. Traffic jam? Who cares?

Canton-i, my second home...

Finally it has come to the last day of the year. We are about to say Goodbye to 2011 and welcome its successor 2012. Today is also a special day for my family as there will be a double celebration in the evening: 40th Wedding Anniversary and 70th Birthday. I am pretty sure that it will be a meaningful event for everyone including those who turn up to join in the celebration. Will take as many pictures as possible and share the moments of the event in my blog soon.

Can't remember how many times I have dined in this restaurant (Canton-i)  but I know that I will always come back for some extremely tantalising noodles and mouth-watering desserts.

Wonton Noodle @ RM12.80

Each plump wonton is filled with shrimp and lean pork.

The shredded black fungus gives the sui kow (dumpling) its crunchiness besides other similar ingredients as the wonton.

Molten custard lava buns @ RM5.80 per basket of 2 pcs.

The sweet and goey custard is sinfully good.

Honey glazed char siew puffs @ RM4.00 per plate of 2 pcs.

The amount of barbecued pork is just right as it does not overshadow the taste of the flaky pastry.

Ginger milk with ginkgo @ RM8.00

Jasmine blooming flower tea @ RM5.00

Honolulu coffee @ RM5.00

Be a Cantonese @ Canton-i

Canton-i is nothing new in this blog. Dining at Canton-i has become a must-do whenever we go to Queensbay Mall. The reason is simple: Mum enjoys eating thread-like wonton noodles and plump wonton with crunchy shrimp filling. Another reason is the uniqueness of their dim sums which captures my heart and keeps me coming back for more, over and over again.

Jasmine Blooming Flower Tea @ RM5.00
Being hand-tied around the base of a Red Globe Amaranth flower, the fine jasmine scented tea leaves gently open and bloom into a lovely flower.

You can request for hot water refills to continue enjoying the beautiful Jasmine scented tea.

Hong Kong style Won Ton noodle @ RM12.80

Lemon-infused barbecued pork ribs puffs @ RM5.10 / 2pcs

Yam flavoured pau with custard filling @ RM6.00 / 2pcs

Yellowish custard leaking from the bottom when bitten into.

Hear the Sound of Noodles @ Canton-i

The ultimate wonton noodle should comprise of perfection in four components, namely the broth (soup), the noodle, the shrimp and pork dumplings and finally the pickled green chillies. The broth should be made using all traditional ingredients – Dai Dei Yu (dried tile fish), chicken and pork bones. The noodle strand should be thin and cooked to a perfect firm but not hard texture. As for the dumplings, crunchy fresh prawns and coarsely minced lean pork are flavoured and wrapped in silky smooth and translucent wonton skin. A perfect bowl of wonton noodle is best enjoyed with some young pickled green chillies to enhance the flavour and boost your appetite before treating yourself to a real carbo meal.

November Brekky 2: Chinese Crullers @ I Love Yoo

Due to the influence of Hong Kong TV series, we tend to imitate their style of living and eating habits. Eating congee as breakfast is not something unusual though we do not like to have it plain. Malaysians like to load their bowl of porridge with lots of ingredients such as meatballs, pork offal, fish etc. As for Chinese cruller, we never deny its status as one of the ingredients even though we often brand it as somehting 'extra'. However, have you ever paired soya milk with Chinese crullers? The Taiwanese do, and they even make this weird combination as their daily staple. How about you?

A wide array of oil-fried stuff

Set A: Scallop porridge with Chinese Cruller @ RM3.90 nett
Set B: Soya Milk with Chinese Cruller @ RM3.90 nett

The porridge tasted quite okay as only a trace amount of dried scallop was found in it.

The very ordinary Soya Milk was neither too sweet nor it tasted artificial.

Don't expect the Chinese crullers to be crunchy like the one you use to get in the night market.

Gourmet Chicken Pie at Dave's Deli

Lately, I noticed a change in my eating habits. As I always believe in the quote that I should "eat breakfast like a King, eat lunch like a Queen and eat dinner like a Peasant", I have practised taking small meals for dinner for years. My love for pies is portrayed only in the morning for I know I can afford to tuck in more greasy stuff and still be able to digest it till the finest bits throughout the whole day. I'm not going to let insulin works its way in converting my glucose into glycogen. My liver simply has no rooms for that. For the past few weeks, I've been craving for starchy, meaty and greasy food with rich and creamy filling, like pies & tarts. One after another, they take their turns to go into my stomach (in fact, every part of my body) and begin their fat deposition journey anywhere they can reach. To make the matter worst, these inexplicable pies craving symptoms are so overpowering at night that I couldn't help dragging my feet to the cafes for it. Please tell me how to stop the cravings, as my indigestion problem is making its way back due to these sinful temptations.

I arrived at Dave's Deli at half past eight, in the EVENING!
My eyes were so hungry when I saw this ---
Gourmet Chicken Pie @ RM6.30
I tried to console myself that it's ok to eat this pie because the garnishing looked pretty healthy and could probably provide me with a 'balanced' (?) diet.
(Not according to the proportion as suggested in the food pyramid)
Well, when I cut it open, there was much relieve because I saw more veg than meat.
Just wanted to prove to myself than only lean meat was found in this pie. So, minus the fat, getting less feeling of guilt.
I didn't want to pour the rich Worcestershire gravy onto my pie but was forced to do so for picture-taking reason (Liar!)
The most lousy Nescafe drink @RM2.50
(Just wonder how they could prepare such a diluted coffee drink that hardly any taste nor smell of coffee could be detected)

October Afternoon Tea 4: Tuna Pie and Apple Pie

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf always serves better pastries and cakes compared to other coffee outlets. Our afternoon tea in Queensbay was another scrumptious treat. Feeling like eating something hot, we selected 2 pies from the glassy shelf.

Apple Pie @ RM8.50
