We celebrated Mother's Day at East Ocean Restaurant (Ipoh Garden South). We did not order any set in advance but instead some common dishes to go with rice. The bill came up to a total RM224, which is on the steeper side compared to most restaurants in Ipoh.

Fried belacan kangkung @ RM20

Fried Oemelette with Shrimps @ RM20

Signature Beancurd @ RM15

Steamed Chicken with Ginger @ RM35

Steamed mystus tengara @ RM50

Three simple reasons to consider a revisit

This is not a repeating post but a revisit to the same restaurant, ordering the same package and dining with the same family members. My previous visit to Ipoh Hometown Restaurant in November 2011 was very remarkable and since then, everyone kept urging Kelvin (big brother) to take us there again. There are 3 simple reasons we wanted to go to the same place for the same food again. The price (unbelievably low at RM138 per set), the taste (very decent Chinese cuisine) and the location (parking lot available in abundance).

Stir-fried lala clams

Fish in fermented soy bean sauce

Braised spare ribs in sweet plum sauce

Stir-fried paku in belacan

Prawns sauteed in light soy sauce

Steamed chicken with ginger

Braised beancurd with mixed vegetables

Herbal chicken

Sweet potato soup

Fiery Food for 3 Spice Girls

Min, Sue and I have something in common. Neither do we share the same profession nor age group. Min, 30, is a general practitioner while Sue, 31, is a remisier. So, what do a doctor, a remisier and a 33-year old teacher have in common?  Well, we all fancy hot and spicy food and are proud to be widely recognised among our friends as 'Taiping Spice Girls'.  If you doubt our tolerance to spicy food, kindly browse through the pictures below. Suppose you know or come across anyone who can stomach these in one single meal, please introduce him / her to  us cause we are now expanding our spice empire and recruiting more potential members in order to further challenge our limitations.

Spicy Pickles @ FOC

Indonesian Curried Prawns @ RM12.00

Ruby Anniversary

Yesterday was my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. I did a very small scale celebration for them because both my brothers and their respective families are not in Taiping. In fact, we had already celebrated this event  earlier in conjunction with my Dad's 70th Birthday. Yesterday, however, was the actual day of registration anniversary so it's an obligation for me to cheer my old folks up and remind the old man the sacrifices and contributions of Mum to the family.

Appetiser: Braised Shandong Peanuts

The Four Treasure Platter comprises Abalone sandwiched with chicken meat, black pepper ostrich meat, deep-fried fish cake and shark fin omelette.

Soon Lee's signature Char Siew served with egg noodle

Steamed cod fish

Indonesian Prawn Curry served with mini mantou

Black Forest Cake

Look at him, so reluctant to pose for the camera.

It was mum who held his hand together. He looked as if he was forced to participate in cake cutting.

Unforgettable Empurau

Empurau, "忘不了 (unforgettable)", is probably the most expensive fish in the country. So far, the highest price recorded is RM1800 per kilogram in Kuala Lumpur. That could have made the fish unforttable too…
The fish is imported directly from freshwater fish suppliers in Sarawak. Lately, the prices for the fish are relatively cheaper than before due to the increase in supply. The astronomical price of empurau does not hamper the curiosity of the diners in enjoying the fish as the meat tastes like a kind of wild fruit, according to the restaurant owner.

Ooh, unforgettable in every way
And forevermore, that's how you'll stay

Sweet potato soup
The above package is more than enough to cater for 10 persons and the price is unbelievably low. Only RM138!!! HAA??!
