To whom it may concern, Happy New Year... ...

I received numerous messages and new year wishes from people who know me, remember me and mark me as one of the regular recipients of their wishes. The only habitual action I performed upon receiving those warm wishes is to reply with the similar message. It was so mechanical without a touch of sentiment. The message alert beeping sound never stopped however, even when the clock had struck 12 midnight. I lifted a pen, and scribbled "Happy New Year, Pam" in my diary. It was so cold. Indeed, those words were emotionless. Even the message in the first few words I wrote was not delivered as how I wanted it to be. I realised that I've never taken the initiative to send wishes to anyone, neither has my closest buddy ever heard of those words. Why do I always wait for the others to think of me first? This, in turn, reminds me of this sonnet.

O! change thy thought, that I may change my mind:
Shall hate be fairer lodged than gentle love?
Be, as thy presence is, gracious and kind,
Or to thyself at least kind-hearted prove:
Make thee another self for love of me,
That beauty still may live in thine or thee.

(Extracted from Sonnet 10 by William Shakespeare)
